Yale Historian Jeroslav Pelikan writes,
“Regardless of what anyone may personally think or believe about him, Jesus of Nazareth has been the dominant figure in the history of Western Culture for almost 20 centuries. If it were possible, with some sort of super magnet, to pull up out of history every scrap of metal bearing at least a trace of his name, how much would be left?”
Numerous historians show that Christianity built the foundations of human rights and the freedoms that people now enjoy. And when Christianity is abandoned, these rights erode and many are lost. This often happens when some immoral elite wealthy and powerful abandon Christianity, they lose moral boundaries and then pursue greed to the hilt. This influences them to cause massive corruption in government and business and also to foment wars everywhere because this is one of the fastest ways to make money.
Tom Holland is a historian who studied classical history at Cambridge and has written several best selling books on ancient civilizations. He at first thought that modern human rights came from the ancient Greeks/Romans and the enlightenment. But as he studied historical books, he found that he was very wrong. He realized that Greco Roman cultures were based on extreme cruelty and abuse to large portions of the population and that our modern concept of human rights comes almost entirely from Christianity.

I shared some powerful proof of Jesus and some benefits of Christianity with an atheist named David Smith and why belief in God is crucial for eternal life, but also this life as the Bible repeatedly says. He wrote in response:
“I’ve been pondering your comment, ‘the evidence for the resurrection is vastly superior to pretty much every other event in history according the standards of legal courts and historians’…I tried to think of a few other disputed historical events…I see that there are far far far more witnesses for the resurrection. I see that they are far stronger and more emphatic…As I thought about the resurrection, I came to realize it is entirely in a class of its own, quite separate from all my other examples. I struggled to think of any other historical event with such significant implications for my life, but I don’t think there is one…I couldn’t think of any historical question with comparable implications for the nature of reality.
The baggage attached to the resurrection is tremendous! One cannot simply accept the resurrection as if it were some kind of stand-alone event. In order to accept the resurrection, one must abandon naturalism and accept supernaturalism. In order to accept the resurrection, one must abandon the idea that consciousness is an emergent phenomenon of the brain and accept that spirits carry our identities. It means ancient people knew more about the high-level nature of our Universe than modern scientists! That’s a big deal!
It means there is an afterlife! It means there is a God! It means Christianity is true and all other religions are false! How many lives have been spent just trying to settle that?! It means we need to figure out how to weave the Bible in with scientific understanding. One doesn’t just accept that the resurrection occurred. It requires taking taking a philosophical leap into a completely different paradigm of thinking.”
This dialogue not only helped David see better reasons for belief in God, his thoughts have helped me improve how I share the profound impact of the resurrection of Jesus on real lives.

BUT IS JESUS’ RESURRECTION TRUE: Summary of major lines of evidence

There are so many reasons we can know for certain Jesus lived. Here are 2 summaries of some of the most powerful reasons we know that confirm that Jesus’ resurrection is based on “infallible proof” as the scholar Luke wrote in Acts 1:3.

No alternatives to a real resurrection are able to explain even a majority of them, let alone all of them. So logically the resurrection has to be true. These facts fit an acronym C-H-R-I-S-T E-A-S-T-E-R that can help you remember them.
CHRIST
C-Crucifixion: All reputable historians and New Testament scholars from major universities agree that Jesus lived, was crucified and died.
Crucial Creeds: Early crucial Christian creeds, including those in 1 Corinthians 15, Philippians 2:6-11, and Hebrews 1:3, encapsulate essential theological tenets such as Christ’s deity, death, resurrection and trace back to Jerusalem. Even some skeptic historians acknowledge that these date back to within 1-2 years after the crucifixion. The creeds were meant to transmit foundational beliefs with simple memory devices to help new Christians become stronger in their beliefs and also to help all Christians be able to give powerful reasons for their faith easily.
H-Healing-Historians: Historians from all backgrounds agree that people living at Jesus’ time, including his enemies, confirmed that He did healings/miracles.
Historians/writers from Jewish, Roman, and Christian backgrounds all agreed that there were many witnesses who testified of major aspects of Jesus’ life, crucifixion and/or resurrection or who had converted to faith based on direct evidence of Jesus’ resurrection. This includes early Christian writers (ca. 50-157), Thallus (ca. AD 55), Mara Bar Serapion (ca. AD 73), Josephus (ca. AD 93), Tacitus (ca. AD 116), Suetonius (ca. AD 120), Pliny the Younger (ca. AD 112), Phlegon (ca. AD 140), Lucian of Samosata (ca. AD 166), Celsus (ca. 175 AD) and others.
R-Reliable early evidence: We have very reliable evidence that belief in a real resurrection originates very early in the historical record (18 months-5 yrs after Jesus’ death) in Jerusalem (1 Cor. 15:1-19). Fiction doesn’t work like this. It is invented long after the events in the story take place.
I-independent eyewitnesses: Jesus appeared to numerous individuals but to groups, as well—and on numerous occasions. He appeared to the women at the tomb, disciples, soldiers, 500 witnesses, skeptics like Paul, and others (Luke 24:36–43, Matthew 28:9, John 20:26–30; 21:1–14, Acts 1:3–6, 1 Corinthians 15:5–7). These are all independent witnesses that confirm the resurrection
S-Sacrifice/Shroud: The sacrifice of the disciples and their willingness to die for belief in a resurrected Messiah based on their personal experiences is one of the most amazing in the annals of history according to expert legal minds like Dr. Simon Greenleaf from Harvard.
There is also much strong evidence that the Shroud of Turin is very strong evidence that Jesus was tortured, died and buried and also that He resurrected. Lead researchers on the Shroud of Turin like Dr. Paolo Di Lazzaro, say,
“We have shown that the most advanced technology available today is unable to replicate all the characteristics of the Shroud image. As a consequence, we may argue it appears unlikely a forger may have done this image with technologies available in the Middle Ages or earlier. The probability the Shroud is a medieval fake is really low. In this sense, the Shroud image is still a scientific challenge.”

EASTER
E-Empty tomb: Nearly all scholars agree that Jesus’ tomb was empty after His crucifixion.
Eastern evidence: Chinese astronomers recorded evidence from astronomy that to them meant that a profound change in human history had occurred.
A) When Jesus was born, Chinese astronomers say a comet from Altair in the constallation of Aquila that they believed signified a perfect sacrifice had come to earth, that He would resurrect and start a new epoch of history. a comet there was a sign in heaven and the Chinese saw it and wrote it down.
B) When Jesus died, they saw a solar eclipse and to them this meant that the sins of all humanity was on one man who proclaimed pardon for all.
C) A few days later, when Jesus resurrected, the Chinese saw a halo and rainbow around the sun. Rainbows in the Bible are a symbol of reconciliation and Jesus brought the ultimate reconciliation of God with all people who will trust in Jesus’ sacrifice for them. See more here:

A-Appearances: Witnesses testify that Jesus appeared to many people after His crucifixion. This is important for many reasons. Here are 3 reasons:
1) There are many independent witnesses who made the same claims. Paul could tell government authorities that they didn’t have to just believe Paul’s words. They could go talk to witnesses of Jesus’ resurrection themselves.
2) The appearance to women is particularly important because no one making up fiction would write that women were the 1st witnesses in the highly sexist Greco-Roman culture of the time where women’s testimony was valid and they were considered liars if they spoke in public.
3) Many witnesses of Jesus’ resurrection were willing to suffer persecution, torture and/or death for what they had personally seen. Never in history do we see many people going through torture and death for something they know is a lie from their own experience.
S- Skeptics converted: James the brother of Jesus, Saul of Tarsus, many skeptical lawyers, historians, scientists and many more scholars, as well as many regular people have converted based on evidence and proof.
T-transformed lives. The apostles changed from fearful of dying to bold and willing to endure anything and die for their belief in Jesus’ resurrection.
E-emergence of the church and ceremonies (like baptism) in Jerusalem. Myths don’t start in places they can easily be fact checked. Since Christianity started right where the resurrection happened and could have easily been disproven, it can’t have been a myth.
R-real, righteous and radical Christians! Millions have been transformed and then transformed communities/nations because of Jesus’ power throughout history.

SKEPTIC EXCUSES DON’T EXPLAIN ALL THE FACTS

Skeptics have proposed alternative hypotheses. But none account for all the facts above and so can’t be considered true.
Excuse #1) Conspiracy excuse: The disciples stole his body.
PROBLEMS: Jews didn’t believe in a resurrected Messiah. 2nd, People aren’t willing to die for something they KNOW isn’t true. So no scholars defend this idea now.
Excuse #2) Apparent Death excuse: He faked his death.
PROBLEMS: Roman soldiers were professionals at killing people. A half-dead man crawl out of a tomb wouldn’t inspire disciples to sacrifice everything and die themselves. No New Testament historians defend this excuse.
Excuse #3) Displaced Body excuse: Someone moved Jesus’ body.
PROBLEMS: First, Jewish laws prevented moving a corpse. Second, the person who moved the body could have stopped Christianity by just telling everyone what he did. And a missing body isn’t proof of resurrection and can’t people to give their lives.
Excuse #4) Hallucination excuse: The disciples didn’t really see Jesus alive after His death. They just hallucinated that they saw Him.
PROBLEMS: Jesus appeared many times, in several places, to over 500 people, both believers and non-believers. There is no hallucination like this. This also doesn’t explain the empty tomb.
This is an example of skeptic claims that don’t have any basis in fact or truth and are easily debunked by historical facts.

JESUS RESURRECTION IS 97% CERTAIN BY ACADEMIC STANDARDS

Dr. Richard Swinburne argues that the combined evidence makes the probability of Jesus’ resurrection approximately 97%, based for several reasons in 3 categories:
1) He says that a good God has strong reasons to become incarnate, primarily to offer a perfect atonement for human sin and to show solidarity with human suffering. This gives God good reasons to raise Jesus from the dead.
- He argues that Jesus uniquely satisfied these requirements during his life—claiming divine prerogatives and teaching his life was an atonement (and over 300 prophecies about the Messiah)—making him the only credible candidate for a divine intervention.
- Finally, the detailed historical evidence—including the empty tomb, and over 500 early, eyewitness accounts of the risen Jesus (1 Corinthians), many of whom died for their belief in Jesus and early Christian celebrations of Jesus’ resurection are together powerful evidence the resurrection really happened.
Dr. Swinburne concludes:
“I conclude that there is one person in human history who satisfied quite well the prior and posterior requirements for being God Incarnate (that is for living the kind of life which we would expect a God, if there is a God, to live on earth); and that is Jesus.
By the prior requirements, to repeat I mean living a good and holy life, giving us good deep moral teaching, showing us that he believed himself to be God Incarnate and that he was making atonement for our sins and founding a Church which taught the latter things.
By the posterior requirements I mean his life being culminated by a super-miracle, such as a Resurrection from the dead. And there is no other plausible candidate in human history for satisfying either of these sets of requirements.
Other founders of great religions did, of course, live good lives, give deep moral teaching and founded churches – the Buddha, for example. But manifestly the Buddha did not teach his own divinity, nor did Mohammad. And manifestly neither of them taught that their lives atoned for our sins. There have been many modern Messiahs who claimed to be God, but they have not satisfied the other requirements – in particular their lives have not been holy.
And no great religion other than Christianity has made a claim to be founded on a super-miracle for which there is in any way the kind of detailed testimony that there is for the foundation miracle of Christianity.”
